About

Thick and Thin is a mental health well-being initiative developed by VAFA players, for young sportsmen. 

 

Thick and Thin is a not-for-profit awareness group aimed at changing the stigma around mental health issues in sport. Targeted towards young people, Thick and Thin seeks to assist young sportsmen identify the signals associated with mental health issues, and normalise the conversations regarding mental health concerns.

Key Objectives

  • Create awareness of men’s mental health issues within the sport and the normalisation of mental health concerns;

  • Encourage team mates to have a conversation if they notice any signs of mental health issues within themselves or others; and

  • Act as a signpost for those either experiencing a mental illness or those supporting a mate through hard times.

Nearly four years after quitting AFL football, former Geelong midfielder Simon Hogan is using his experience with mental illness to help others battle their demons. Simon retired at the end of 2012 after being diagnosed with a depressive disorder.
